MCOA along with other agencies has worked for many years to find and create solutions to address the behavioral health needs of older adults in Massachusetts. Through these efforts we now have 5 regional Elder Mental Health Outreach Teams (EMHOTs) based out of Amesbury, Bellingham, Greenfield, New Bedford and Somerville/Cambridge, which cover 48 communities.

EMHOTs and their community partners are frequently the initial identifiers of those elders in need of behavioral health, EMHOTs provide the link to, or directly provide behavioral health services, AND of vital importance is that they are able to connect elders to the additional community supports, resources and services that they need to address the broader factors associated with behavioral health issues, such as housing insecurity, chronic diseases, loss of valued relationships,  and financial challenges- this connectivity is why the work of the EMHOTs is so successful!
