Easthampton: July 2018:  Massachusetts Councils on Aging (MCOA) presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Lillian Glickman at the organization’s Annual Meeting held in Worcester.  Ms. Glickman has more than 50 years of experience in gerontology and with the Massachusetts aging network.

Currently, Ms. Glickman serves at the CO-Director of the Management of Aging Services Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston, a program she helped initiate 15 years ago to train managers and future leaders in elder services.  From 1998 until January 2003, she served at the Secretary of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, a cabinet level position. Prior to that, she served as Assistant Secretary for nine years during two separate time-periods.  During her time at Elder Affairs, she worked to increase funding for councils on aging and to expand the range and scope of home care services to maintain elders in the community.  She also oversaw the development and implementation of the elder protective services system and the regulation and certification of assisted living facilities.

David Stevens, the executive director for MCOA, warmly recalled working in close partnership with Ms. Glickman for several years.  David shared, “I consider Lillian my mentor, a tireless advocate who, for all of her accomplishments, deserves the same respect, admiration, and recognition as legendary elder advocates Frank Manning and Elsie Frank.”

Ms. Glickman’s other accomplishments included the initiation of the Supportive Housing Program to expand services to elders in public housing and the implementation of the Prescription Advantage Program, the first state sponsored insurance-based drug program in the country.  She received her A.B. degree from Harvard and an MSW and Ph.D. from the Heller School at Brandeis University.

MCOA partners with the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, National Councils on Aging, Massachusetts Municipal Association, a variety of state agencies, other non-profits, and academic institutions, all seeking to improve the quality of lives of the Commonwealth’s 1.7 million older adults over the age of sixty.
