The Town of Bridgewater Department of Elder Affairs/Council on Aging (COA) is accepting applications for a Community Wellness and Volunteer Coordinator. Under the direct supervision of the Elder Affairs Director, the ideal candidate will possess knowledge of and experience in working with older adults age 60 plus. The Community Wellness and Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for managing all aspects of Department wellness and social programs, activities, trips, workshops and classes located both at the senior center as well as at offsite locations such as the library or other Municipal buildings. The person will identify, coordinate, and staff these and other volunteer opportunities at the Cole-Yeaton Senior Center. This position also works collaboratively with Department staff for the development, implementation and marketing of all programming occurring at our senior center.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and manages extensive activity calendar of events. Includes contract management assistance with instructors, scheduling of rooms, recruitment of instructors, arranging furniture and equipment for program, and evaluation of programs to provide feedback to instructors and the Director as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and user friendly My Senior Center® data management system to utilize in the registration of participants, volunteers, and all other related duties.
  • Performs outreach and marketing to identify senior needs, organizes events, and promotes established programs.
  • Evaluates programs by participant feedback and assesses whether they satisfy program needs; makes follow-up recommendation to Director.

Essential Functions

  • Effectively builds and manages relationships with community partners to promote healthy aging programs and volunteer opportunities.
  • Recruits and supports volunteer staff including scheduling, training, communication, and other support as needed.
  • Manages all details regarding scheduling and registration for programs, following up with course participants as needed. Effectively promotes COA programs to the community at large.
  • Works with others in the Department to create flyers, write press releases and social media posts, and makes presentations.
  • Writes a monthly column/blog in COA newsletter that educates the community on various topics to help people stay healthy, engaged, and how to give back and volunteer at the senior center.
  • Provides support and assistance to the front office as it pertains to registration of programs, information and assistance to the public and responds to inquiries regarding programs.

Physical Requirements

  • Moderate physical effort required in performing duties. Frequently moves tables, chairs, and equipment.
  • Duties require standing, walking, sitting, talking, listening, using hands, kneeling and bending. Must be able to lift and move items weighing 30+ pounds.

Additional Information

  • Works under the direction of the Director following department rules, regulations and policies requiring the ability to plan and perform operations and independently complete assigned tasks.
  • Provides daily problem solving, and public relations support to all participants and instructors.
  • Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of departmental operations and uses considerable judgment and initiative in responding to inquiries, particularly in situations that are not clearly defined.
  • Makes frequent contact with the community at-large providing wellness programs and volunteer coordination to the senior center. Communication is by means of telephone, email, personal discussion and correspondence, which require excellent customer service skills, courtesy, patience and discretion.
  • Work is performed under office conditions with some travel around town.
  • Has access to departmental related confidential information.
  • Must be a collaborative, positive team player.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in gerontology, social services or related field and three years of relevant program and/or volunteer management experience including experience overseeing and promoting health and wellness programs, as well as volunteer coordination. Candidate should be a dependable self-starter with excellent writing and analytic abilities. Strong program management skills required. Strong computer, organizational, and communication skills essential. Must be familiar with older adult learning styles and have an understanding of aging and older adults, caregivers, and people with disabilities. A reliable car is required, as well as a valid driver’s license and car insurance.
