Join your fellow MCOA people for a series of learning sessions geared to give you the skills and confidence you need to supervise others, whether you’ve been supervising for years or are new to the role. The series continues through the spring with a total of 4 core sessions and 5 electives, all of which use practical, real-time experience. Here is the schedule:
Fundamentals, March 30, 9:30 – 11:30 am: Supervision depends on knowing the people you work with … and knowing yourself! We’ll touch on skills to foster engaged communication and interaction among the players, providing a common language and basic understanding.
Listening, April 15, 1:30 – 3 pm: We think communication is about speaking clearly and being understood, however it depends even more on listening and understanding.
Communication Styles, April 29, 9:30 – 11 am: Some people we communicate with easily and others we don’t (and vice versa). It’s a matter of style, both yours and others’.
Giving Feedback, May 19 1:30 – 3 pm: As a supervisor, you’re charged to shape the behavior of the people who report to you. Learn how to ensure results while you foster relationships.
Elective Sessions (Registration will come after you’ve registered for Core Sessions)
Engagement, Motivation, & Delegation, May 27, 10:30 – 11:30 am: The key to keeping good people is to engage them, motivate them, and empower them. Learn how to do that.
The ABCs of Time Management, June 3, 10:30 – 11:30 am: Practical skills to manage Attention, establish good Boundaries, and make wise time management Choices – the ABCs.
5-Step Project Management, June 10, 10:30 – 11:30 am: A low-tech way to break down projects and incorporate them into your daily schedule. Bring a project for hands-on work.
Meetings That Work, June 17, 10:30 – 11:30 am: Learn how to set up a meeting, run it effectively, and negotiate the challenges that arise.
Personal Organization Skills, June 24, 10:30 – 11:30 am: Learn a realistic 4-step model for getting your desk and your files (and your life!) in order.
Practice Groups: In tandem with the sessions, practice groups meet together to report on experiments, get to know one another, and discuss results. These self-run groups form at the Fundamentals session and meet regularly as a small community.
Workbook: You’ll receive a comprehensive workbook with handouts for each session, questionnaires, reflection pieces, and further resources to explore on your own.
Pre-series survey/Post-series evaluation: The initial survey gauges your interest in proposed topics. After the series you can evaluate the experience.
